Utility Knives
Utility Knives – The Everyday In-Between Knife
A utility knife sits between a paring knife and a chef’s knife. It is long enough for bigger jobs but light enough for delicate ones, so it earns its place in almost every kitchen.
Reach for it when a chef’s knife is too big and a paring knife is too small.
What is a utility knife?
A utility knife has a narrow blade of around 12–16cm, with either a straight or lightly serrated edge. It is also called a sandwich knife or petty knife.
Why choose utility knives?
- Versatile: sandwiches, fruit, cheese, tomatoes, small cuts of meat and more.
- Nimble: easier to control than a large knife on small items.
- Space saving: one knife covers lots of everyday tasks.
- Good for smaller hands: light and comfortable.
How to choose the right knife
Length. 12–15cm suits most cooks.
Edge. Plain edges give cleaner cuts on most foods. A fine serrated edge copes better with tomatoes and crusty rolls.
Handle. Look for a comfortable grip.
Check your set. Many knife sets already include one.
How to use it
- Use it on a board for slicing sandwiches, cheese and fruit.
- Use the tip for trimming and the heel for firmer ingredients.
- Keep fingers curled away from the blade.
Caring for your knife
- Hand wash and dry straight away, and store the knife safely in a block or on a magnetic strip.
- Avoid the dishwasher, which can dull the edge and damage handles.
- Store it safely in a knife storage solution such as a block, magnetic strip or sheath.
- Use a wooden or bamboo board. See our cutting and cheese boards.
